The Institute of Social Work and Social Science is an internationally supported degree-granting educational institution located in Haiti. We were founded in 2011 to provide undergraduate social work and social science training in both theory and practice.

We currently offer a BSW and MSW in Social Work as well as undergraduate and graduate programs in Social Science including Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, and Political Science.

A Haitian Creole program is also offered for students who wish to complete intensive coursework in Haitian Creole language. The Creole Language Institute is designed for researchers, students and development workers who anticipate depending on Haitian Creole as their primary means of communication.

The Institute was established to raise up a new generation of Haitian leaders who improve the lives of ordinary Haitians and contribute to the enactment of just social policies in Haiti. The Institute aims to developing new knowledge for the profession and prepare competent, effective and ethical social workers who enhance human well-being and alleviate suffering and inequity.

The Bachelor’s in Social Work Program emphasizes commitment to social justice, empowerment, and the eradication of poverty in Haiti and beyond. The curriculum prepares a new generation of leaders to provide competent, strengths-based, and ethics-driven services to individuals, families, and communities. The BSW program prepares students to be professional social workers who collaborate with groups, organizations, and communities to achieve the mission of social and economic justice, and self-determination of people and groups in the communities they serve. The Institute has committed to providing an integrated and coherent undergraduate curriculum which prepares students to:

  • Actively promote social justice and empowerment of economically and social oppressed, vulnerable and underserved populations in Haiti and beyond.
  • Integrate knowledge, skills, and field experiences in generalist practice with people who have been made vulnerable to poverty, oppression and/or social apathy and exclusion.
  • Be reflective and ethical practitioners who work to alleviate social problems and enhance the competence of individuals, groups, and communities to improve social functioning.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong professional development and learning.

  • The Institute is led by a team which includes the Director of Social Work Education, the Director of Social Science Education, and a representative of the Faculty. Most faculty members have doctoral degrees from North American or European educational institutions and all are actively involved in conducting research in Haiti.

    Additional staff members include language instructors, tutors, research assistants, administrative assistants, and facility staff.

    The Institute for Social Work and Social Science has two campuses: the Delmas campus and the Tomassin campus. Located in upper Delmas, an urban continuation of the capital city which houses much of the area's commercial and industrial enterprise, the campus includes eight classrooms, meeting space, and a library/study area. The Tomassin campus is located in a quiet residential neighborhood and includes the administrative offices, research facilities, meeting rooms, as well as housing for Institute visitors.

    Housing on the Tomassin campus is primarily intended for overseas guests including visiting faculty, study abroad students and visiting researchers. However, if space is available, housing is open to others who are visiting, working or studying in Haiti. Housing options including private and shared rooms with breakfast and dinner included in the daily and weekly rental rates. Internet, hot water, potable drinking water and 24-hour per day electricity is also included.
